Advancements in food labeling systems revolutionizing safer kitchens

Cloud-based, app-driven platforms on the rise

The world is looking for better, safer, smarter solutions all the time.

When it comes to food safety compliance, it can be easy for a prep cook in a fast-paced foodservice environment to forget or misremember the correct hold times and shelf life of food items required to create a multitude of changing menu selections. And with respect to labeling popular grab-and-go products, keeping track of allergens and any ingredient changes on the fly can seem nearly impossible.

With these struggles in mind, foodservice suppliers like DayMark Safety Systems have developed new kitchen automation systems designed to transform the way restaurants, quick-service retailers and non-commercial kitchens safely prepare the food they serve consumers.

“These platforms help operators run their businesses more efficiently and safely,” says Jill Carte, Category Manager of Kitchen Automation for DayMark. DayMark’s solution is totally secure, server-independent and eliminates concerns presented by traditional methods of labeling food, as it moves from back-of-house to front-of-house.

“Among the benefits offered by these platforms are enhanced cross-location communication, real-time menu and regulation updates and company-wide learning that is simplified and consistent,” adds Carte.

When Main Street Ventures, a restaurant group made up of more than 20 distinctly branded fine dining eateries located in the eastern U.S., conducted tests with three competing food labeling solutions, they searched for a well-rounded solution that met all of their back-of-house needs, according to Brent Courson, executive chef at Main Street Ventures.

Courson stated that their selected option “helped us check all of our boxes: saving us time, ensuring food labeling compliance and seeing a return on our investment in six to nine months, depending on the volumes of business done at our different location.”

The boxes to which Courson refers called for a solution with a variety of functions, features and operations necessary for a truly comprehensive system, such as:

  • A user-friendly interface designed for use at the corporate level on any PC or Mac
  • Secure, centralized management and communication for menu data, training materials, and other critical information
  • Functionality that allows information to be shared with foodservice operators around the globe
  • The ability for users to build and manage their ingredients and recipes in a single system across their entire organization
  • Associated hardware, including a label printer and tablet
  • Wireless delivery of data to the printer for creation of food prep and grab & go labels

“With all these tools in one place, these systems are poised to revolutionize kitchen automation” says Carte.

Food labeling doesn’t have to be a kitchen nightmare—with proper labeling and organizational systems, operators, chefs and cooks can be confident that the food being served is safe.
