(December 7, 2010)—New England Wholesale food distributor AGAR, product specialist for independent restaurants, retailers and other food service providers, received the 2010 Family Business Association (FBA) Community Excellence Award at their recent Annual Awards dinner.
This award goes to a company that the Family Business Association feels shows exceptional philanthropic and community initiatives. AGAR’s heavy involvement in the community, especially through the participation with organizations that help to fight hunger, is what earned them the award.
Some of the major initiatives that AGAR directs resources to are; Community Servings, a non-profit organization that provides meals to individuals and families in the Massachusetts area suffering from chronic and critical illnesses. AGAR is also involved with The Greater Boston Food Bank, one of the largest food banks in the nation, which serves over 394,000 people a year who cannot make ends meet and need help putting food on the table for their families. Both organizations have received both financial support and volunteers from the AGAR staff.
“We have always believed it is our duty, given the nature of our business to support organizations that fight hunger, stated Karen S. Bressler, president and CEO of AGAR. “We are proud to receive an award for such efforts but during times like these, more and more people are going hungry for any number of reasons and we all need to step up and do our part.”
Among other initiatives AGAR supports, the wholesale food distributor has helped a number of other organizations including Aids Action Committee, Dress for Success, Hostelling International’s Cultural Kitchen Program and many others.
