Sheetz sheds a standard c-store feature to focus more on food

Sheetz, an operator of c-stores with restaurants inside, took another step away from its core business with the opening of a 15,000-square-foot café-and-grocery in Morgantown, W. Va., cheek-to-jowl with a West Virginia University campus. The facility is the first Sheetz that does not sell gasoline.

The centerpiece of the hybrid is the 100-seat café. As in a conventional Sheetz, restaurant customers customize and place their orders through touch-screen terminals, then wait for their food to be prepared.

Surrounding it are shelves stocked with grocery products.

The company operates about 500 c-stores in the eastern United States. Its annual revenues top $6.9 billion.
