Add two legendary names to the list of players looking to capitalize on the burger boom: Domino's founder Tom Monaghan, and NFL-coach-turned-steakhouse-mogul Don Shula.
Monaghan, who sold his controlling interest in Domino’s in 1998 for $1 billion, told a Florida newspaper that he intends to toss a few patties on the grill before the end of November at a new delivery-only concept called Gyrine Burgers. Gyrine (a contraction of GI and Marine Corps, a nod to Monaghan’s military service) will aim to deliver a burger to customers' homes or workplace within 15 minutes, Monaghan revealed to Naples (Fla.) Daily. The prototype will be located in Naples.
True to the original form of Domino’s, the start-up will feature a barebones menu: Burgers, priced at just under $6, but no drinks or sides.
Meanwhile, Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history, said he’s launching a fast-casual chain called Shula Burgers, starting with a prototype in the Florida keys.
Like Zinburger, the burger venture of concept creator Sam Fox, Shula Burger will put an emphasis on wine as well as beef, with pairings suggested for its sandwiches. It will also feature chicken sandwiches and the fast-food staples of shakes and fries.
Shula entered the restaurant business in 1989 while still leading the Miami Dolphins. He retired from football after the 1995 season, and now has his name on 34 upscale restaurants, including Shula’s Steak Houses and Shula’s 347 Grill.
