VIRGINIA (August 10, 2010)—Preparations were underway for months in Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia for the highly anticipated Boy Scouts of America 2010 National Scout Jamboree which took place July 26, 2010 to August 4, 2010. Boy Scouts of America (BSA) contracted with Eurest Dining Services and Canteen Vending Services to provide exclusive foodservice for the jamboree.
This is the 100th anniversary year of the Boy Scouts of America, and the jamboree was the largest part of the celebration. Compass Group managed the foodservice for this event in 2005 and was subsequently awarded the foodservice contract for 2010.
More than 37,000 Scouts, 9,000 volunteers, and an estimated 200,000 visitors were fed during the 10-day event. Compass Group catered to various palates and preferences, including vegetarian, kosher and halal meals.
The scope of service was divided in six segments:
- Subcamp meals: Eurest Dining Services prepared breakfast and dinner—approximately 633,110 meals for Scouts and staff.
- Kiosk bag lunches: Canteen’s Middletown Culinary Center prepared 509,000 bagged lunches.
- Retail dining and concessions: Lunch and dinner centers were available for visitors on-site from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Volunteer dining: Breakfast and dinners prepared for 9,000 volunteers—more than 115,000 meals total.
- Canteen provided the on-site vending services.
- Various concession offerings were easily accessible throughout the jamboree.
To prepare for the jamboree, Compass Group customized cooking facilities outfitted with mobile prep kitchens and refrigeration trucks, constructed for use by a team of chefs flown in to work their culinary magic. Included in the line-up was a special appearance by Chef Martin Yan on Tuesday, August 3.
