Food service distributor seeks to hire 50 now, up to 350 eventually

TAMPA, FL (February 15, 2010)—Gordon Food Service is doing its part to feed a job-hungry Tampa Bay region.

Gordon, a Michigan-based supplier to restaurants, hospitals, schools and other institutions, bought the sprawling, 1 million-square-foot former Albertson's distribution center in Plant City last month. Now it's on a hunt for warehouse, maintenance and transportation workers, bringing its quest to bay area job fairs and the Tampa Bay Workforce Alliance.

Initially, the company wants to hire about 50 workers before launching distribution by early fall, company spokeswoman Deb Abraham said. Within a few years, it intends to ramp up to at least 350 employees at the site.

Based in Grand Rapids, Mich., Gordon Food Service bills itself as North America's largest family-owned food service distributor. The company also operates GFS Marketplace, a discount bulk food store with locations in Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Brandon.
