ID NEWS: Deloitte says it no longer stands behind 2000-2001 Ahold audits

Royal Ahold, Zaandam, The Netherlands, has received a letter from its accountant Deloitte & Touche announcing that Deloitte "no longer maintains its auditors' opinions" in connection with the annual accounts of the company for 2000 and 2001, according to Ahold's 6-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Thursday, March 6.

The letter from Deloitte raises questions as to whether problems with Ahold's financial statements began "earlier than had been acknowledged," according to The Washington Post.

Meanwhile, Ahold is looking into which staffers may have been directly involved in "prepayment deals" involving vendor rebates, the Post reports, citing a "source familiar with the company."
