The Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, an annual event dedicated to TV specials about the ocean predator, has accumulated a core group of dedicated viewers over the years. The fanfare has not gone unnoticed by some operators, who are capitalizing on the series’s cult following through a range of themed food specials, games and drinks. Here are five such promos designed to lure in fans during this year’s Shark Week (July 23 to 30).
2. Shark Week beach party
La Senorita Mexican Restaurant is celebrating with a variety of activities and specials. Every night of the week, the chain’s Traverse City, Mich., location will play host to a different event, such as Jaws bingo on Wednesday and a margarita party on Friday, in which the first five guests who order a Michigan Margarita will receive a Shark Week T-shirt. Guests can also enter to win a trip to swim with sharks at the Florida Aquarium.
3. Live viewing event
Shark Week fans in San Antonio will be able to enjoy food specials with a show at Michin Grill Kitchen & Tequila Bar. Throughout the week, the restaurant will air the Discovery Channel’s shark programming while offering $2 off ceviche as well as $5 off its happy hour menu items, which include tostadas, shrimp and Baja tacos.
4. Cocktails sans straws
Sweetwater Tavern and Grill in Chicago created two themed drinks in honor of the weeklong event. Guests will be able to choose from its Shore Thing cocktail (made with tangerine-flavored rum, pineapple juice, blue curacao and ginger beer) or the nonalcoholic Sharky Temple (grenadine and ginger beer). In a collaboration with the Shedd Aquarium, both drinks will be served strawless (in an effort to aid oceanic conservation), and 20% of the drink proceeds will go to Shedd. Customers who post a picture of their drink on Instagram will also be entered to win two tickets to the aquarium.
5. Shark and seafood boil
Hank's Cocktail Bar in Washington, D.C., is kicking off the week with a seafood boil. For $35, guests will be able to pick and choose from a full platter of mussels, clams, shrimp, potatoes, corn and mako shark, as well as a full bloody mary bar.
