The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn bans on same-sex marriages will be a boon to catering, generating more than $2.5 billion in total wedding expenditures for local businesses nationwide, according to a study conducted before the decision.
Included in that 5 percent increase in spending would presumably be payments to restaurants for wedding-related events like rehearsal dinners.
The projections were drafted late last fall by NerdWallet.com, a blog focused on promoting consumers’ financial wellbeing. The study looked at prevailing wedding expenditures in all 50 states, which totaled $51 billion, then projected how much the state-by-state subtotals would rise if any impediments on same-sex marriage were removed.
It found that wedding-related revenues would increase in all states, from a low of $3.4 million annually in North Dakota to $414.3 million in California.
