Chipotle may give away more food

To spur sales recovery after the fallout from its food safety crises, Chipotle is considering doubling down on the free burrito offers it’s been courting as a salve to the chain’s falling comps, the Chicago Tribune reports.

At an investor conference held Tuesday, Chipotle executives said they might up the amount of free burrito and “buy one, get one” promotions they’re currently offering, the Tribune says.

As the chain digs deeper into product giveaways, reports suggest it may be pulling back from food safety somewhat, considering changes to the protections it aired earlier this year in response to the E.coli and norovirus incidents at its restaurants.

As part of those potential changes, Chipotle may scale back on or get rid of pathogen testing for certain ingredients, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The chain said it expects a loss for the first quarter of 2016—a rarity for the brand—as comps continue to slide.
