Pizza Hut slashes preservatives, antibiotics

As at least one of its major competitors makes inroads toward a so-called clean menu, Pizza Hut has unveiled plans to gradually cut its use of ingredients containing preservatives and antibiotics.

The pizza chain said it will remove the preservatives BHA and BHT from its meat supply by the end of next month, followed by eliminating all artificial preservatives from its cheese by the close of March 2017.

In addition, the chain will no longer use chicken treated with antibiotics “important to human medicine” after the March deadline.

"We believe that Pizza Hut food shouldn't only taste great, but you should feel great about it, too," Chief Brand Officer Jeff Fox said in a statement. "Our enhanced and expanded commitment to superior restaurant-quality food is the result of listening closely to our customers, and they say that these are things that they do [not] want in their pizzas.”

Pizza Hut removed artificial colors and flavors from its primary pizzas last year.

The chain is also on the cusp of putting a new makeover strategy into action, one that aims to remodel at least 10 percent of franchised locations each year.
