Urban Outfitters is branching into the pizza business through the acquisition of the restaurant group that operates the three-unit Pizzeria Vetri chain.
The retailer’s purchase of the Vetri Family restaurant group also extends its holdings to include a gastropub (Alla Spina), a rotisserie (Lo Spiedo), a trattoria (Amis) and a casual Italian concept (Osteria). The deal did not extend to Family’s signature restaurant, Vetri. Urban Outfitters already holds the rights to two restaurant concepts, Terrain Café and Herald Square Café.
The Vetri Family restaurants will continue to be operated by the sellers, Mark Vetri and Jeff Benjamen. The acquisition will enable them to grow the group more rapidly, indicated Vetri, chef-partner in the group.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Pizzeria Vetri currently has branches in Philadelphia and Austin, Texas.
Urban Outfitters’ core business is retailing. Its holdings include 240 Urban Outfitters stores, 214 Antropologie Group units and 112 Free People branches.
