Creating an urban garden to grow herbs

Living in a big city like L.A. it’s not always easy to find a spot to grow fresh herbs, but this was something really important for me to do when I opened Mezze. We found a spot behind the restaurant next to some trees, built some planters and started planting a variety of herbs. A few weeks later I had a garden full of Egyptian mint, fresh zatar, box basil, savory, tarragon and more. All of the herbs quickly flowered which was a great plus. I got so excited that I started picking too much and ended up killing off some of the plants. We replanted and I really waited a few months this time to let things grow in strong! Growing my own herbs not only provides the restaurant with a beautiful and fresh product, it also gives us a great sense of social responsibility.
