Sysco Central Illinois Launches BuyLocal Initiative

On its Web site, the company says the initiative “creates an opportunity for restaurants like yours to purchase local product from local farmers and artisans. This program guarantees that you receive the highest quality product easily and efficiently…
Central Illinois has some of the most fertile land in the world. It should come as no surprise that some of the most productive and talented farmers and artisans conduct business here.”

Operators create an account online and can shop the “market” Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to noon. Once orders are submitted, the BuyLocal products are delivered along with the customer’s next regular Thursday or Friday Sysco order.

Products featured in the program so far include everything from free-range eggs to fresh produce to locally raised meats. The company reportedly has pledged to only include food produced and processed within 100 miles of its Lincoln distribution center.

In a local news report, Sysco Central Illinois president Robbie Roberts said, “I’m thrilled about it. We’ve got the distribution figured all out. Now we’re trying to tackle the other side of the equation.”
