Taco Bell to promote protein nationally

Steak Chalupas aren’t the only way to load up on protein at Taco Bell anymore.

The chain owned by Yum! Brands Inc. (YUM) is introducing a Cantina Power Menu nationwide on July 17. Taco Bell last year tested a Power Protein Menu with chicken and steak burritos and bowls after its low-calorie and low-fat menu wasn’t resonating with customers.

“People are not looking for diet food,” Brian Niccol, who’s in line to become Taco Bell’s chief executive officer, said on a conference call with reporters today. “What they are looking for is food that gives them energy, food that’s going to give them freshness, food that’s going to give them the protein.”
