U.S. Foodservice Sales Climb, Parent Ahold

Net sales at U.S. Foodservice, Columbia, MD, increased 2.3% to $4.4 billion. Net sales at the second largest American distributorship's broadline division increased 1.8% to $3.8 billion, while at North Star Food Service, net sales climbed 5.4% to $586 million, the global retailer said.

Ahold said the unit was on track for meeting its 1.7 percent 2006 margin target and it expected to improve gross margins in its retail arms and operating margins at U.S. Foodservice.

The company said sales rose to 10.48 billion euros ($13.5 billion) from 10.45 billion euros a year earlier. The results were below the 10.53 billion euros expected by analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires.
