Restrictions tighten on restaurants as pandemic charges on

A number of states and cities have taken steps to discourage crowds from gathering inside or outside. The measures also aim to encourage mask wearing.

Nearly 100 places have been stripped of their liquor licenses, and 600 more face fines of up to $10,000. Just shy of 1,000 places were checked on Monday night alone.

The plan put forth by Republican leaders would also remove restrictions on how restaurants could spend the money.

A number of areas are stepping up their policing efforts and increasing the penalties for violators. Meanwhile, more states are halting or reversing restaurants' re-openings.

The National Restaurant Association is urging Congress to take more steps to prevent additional closures as states reshut their dining rooms.

More jurisdictions, including Texas, say they may have to take that route to temper the surge.

Groups in New Mexico and Texas go to court to thwart governors' shutdown orders.
