Payment preferences are evolving

Consumer payment preferences are changing with the times.

  • Of customers who use credit and debit cards to pay at restaurants, 32 percent are using them more than a year ago. In 2009, only 23 percent were using their credit or debit cards more often than in 2008
  • Compared to last year, 11 percent of consumers are also using their credit and debit cards less often, compared to 16 percent who did the same in the previous year. But for more than half of consumers, credit and debit card usage remains unchanged
  • Between credit and debit cards, consumers now prefer to use debit cards over credit cards. In 2009, the preference was for credit cards over debit cards
