The DfE program is a voluntary standards program of the EPA. For a product to receive DfE recognition, it must meet standards for biodegradability, aquatic toxicity and human toxicity. The DfE-recognized Sysco-brand products meet or exceed the performance levels of the original formulations and are available for use in government and institutional settings that must comply with stringent requirements for use of environmentally preferable cleaning products, the company said. The items are offered exclusively by Sysco and are also available to foodservice operations across North America.
Clive Davies, chief of the EPA's DfE program, said, "The purpose of the Design for the Environment program is to recognize and encourage cleaning products with environmentally preferable chemistry. The successful formulation of Sysco's 16 recognized products is the most comprehensive to date in the cleaning product arena. We are excited about Sysco's environmental stewardship, dedication to continuous product improvement and their role in leading change in the cleaning industry's products."
Richard J. Schnieders, Sysco chairman and ceo, observed, "As the leading distributor to foodservice operators throughout North America, it is imperative that we recognize the impact our company's actions can have and act in a socially responsible manner to become the benchmark for others. The development of our DfE Earth Plus(R) products is an important milestone for the industry we serve and for the progression of Sysco-brand items."
