Hot honey ushered in a sweet-heat tsunami that continues to gain force across chain restaurant menus. Now sandwich giant Subway, is going all in on the “swicy” movement, launching two new chef-curated subs Apr. 3 that layer on the flavor.
Both sandwiches get a shot of sweet heat from Subway’s newest signature sauce, a blend of honey, cayenne and habañero pepper powder enhanced with garlic, onion and cloves.
The Hot Honey Pepperoni sub is a build of pepperoni and provolone, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions and drizzles of Hot Honey Sauce on toasted Italian bread. Hot Honey Chicken features rotisserie-style chicken and melted Monterey-Cheddar cheese, topped with lettuce, tomatoes and red onions on Italian bread. This sub provides a double dose of heat with two sauces—Hot Honey and Creamy Sriracha—and is finished with SubKrunch, Subway’s proprietary crisp and savory topping.
“At Subway, we are constantly testing bold new innovations to stay ahead of culinary trends and predict the flavors our guests are craving,” said Paul Fabre, SVP of culinary and innovation at Miami-based Subway. “Over the past year, our fans have been all about sweet heat—which is already a staple on our menu with sauces like Sweet Onion Teriyaki and Creamy Sriracha. Subway is turning up the heat with our own Hot Honey Sauce, bringing a new level of swicy to our menu with two new sandwiches perfectly crafted to highlight its sweet and spicy flavors.”
Subway has focused a lot of R&D on sauces, greatly expanding the lineup since it began its menu overhaul in 2021. “Our fans know we’re the sub sauce experts, which is why we’re putting a Subway twist on a hot culinary trend, combining sweet honey with hot pepper and a savory blend of spices,” said Fabre.
When it makes its menu debut, the new Hot Honey Pepperoni joins Subway’s $6.99 Meal of the Day—a curated menu of Subway’s newest and most iconic subs, available seven days a week at a value price. For a limited time, the Thursday Meal of the Day is now a six-inch Hot Honey Pepperoni along with a choice of chips or cookies and fountain drink for $6.99; guests can also upgrade to a footlong for $9.99 at participating locations.
Customers can opt for the new Hot Honey Sauce as a condiment on any Subway sandwich. And if they’re looking for a new beverage to cool their palates, the chain introduced Celsius Sparkling Orange, available for the first time nationwide.
