ID NEWS: More than 50 percent of distributor SKUs are unprofitable, say consultants

More than 50 percent of items carried by broadliners are unprofitable for them, according to a landmark study on item level profitability in the foodservice distribution channel. The study was a joint project of Technomic, Inc., Chicago, and Willard Bishop Consulting (WBC), Barrington, IL.

"Our research clearly demonstrates that the industry is in critical need of more efficient assortment," notes Bob Goldin, Technomic executive vice president and a study co-director.

"This finding should be a rallying cry for manufacturers and distributors to work together on more effectively managing product mix and inventory levels," adds Paul Weitzel, WBC vice president.
