Former Tropical Smoothie CEO takes helm at Smalls Sliders

Charles Watson replaces former Smalls CEO Maria Rivera, who left the 24-unit fast-casual chain last month. Investors hope he can replicate the smoothie chain's franchise growth.

Smalls Sliders has a new CEO.

The Atlanta-based fast-casual chain on Tuesday said Charles Watson has taken the helm, following the departure last month of former CEO Maria Rivera. Watson was most recently CEO of Tropical Smoothie Café, which he expanded to more than 1,500 units, tripling revenue to $1.4 billion, the company said. Watson also led Tropical Smoothie through its acquisition by private-equity firm Blackstone last year.

Co-founded by Walk-Ons Sports Bistreaux CEO Brandon Landry, Smalls is backed by 10 Point Capital and former NFL Hall of Famer Drew Brees. 

Landry said Watson is the leader the 24-unit chain needs at this stage of growth.

“His proven ability to scale restaurant concepts while maintaining quality and culture is exceptional,” Landry said in a statement. “What impressed me most is his genuine commitment to the success of both franchisees and team members—qualities that align perfectly with our brand’s values.”

Scott Pressly, managing partner of 10 Point Capital who previously hired Watson as CEO at Tropical Smoothie, said in a statement that he witnessed Tropical Smoothie’s transformation as a national powerhouse.

“I knew [Watson] was the ideal choice for Smalls Sliders,” Pressly said. “His rare combination of strategic vision and operational excellence drives results for franchisees. When you find a leader with Charles’ track record, you don’t hesitate to bring them into your portfolio again.”

Watson also previously led franchise growth and brand development for Wyndham Hotels and IHG Hotels and Resorts.

Watson said he plans to enhance operational efficiency while maintaining the brand’s signature quality and hospitality.

“My focus is straightforward,” he said in a statement. “Drive profitability for our franchise partners and expand strategically while keeping our commitment to local communities at the forefront.”
