7-Eleven launches $5 meal deal

The country's largest convenience-store chain is looking to lure value-focused consumers with the deal, which includes two slices of pizza and a 20-ounce soda.

Add 7-Eleven, the country's largest-convenience-store chain, to the roster of companies competing in the meal deal value wars. 

Through Jan. 7, the Irving, Texas-based retailer will offer a $5 Pizza Meal Deal featuring two slices of pizza and a 20-ounce Coke or Sprite. 

Available at participating 7-Eleven, Speedway and Stripes stores for 7Rewards and Speedy Rewards members, the deal features new, bigger slices for both whole pizza and by-the-slice options—and a new Philly Cheesesteak pizza.

Don't plan on snagging the deal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Consumers are limited to two $5 Pizza Meal Deals per day, the chain said. 

The Philly Cheesesteak pizza “combines the savory elements of a classic cheesesteak with the comforting appeal of pizza,” 7-Eleven said.

In yet another example of elevated c-store fare, the new pizza includes thinly sliced, rich and “umami-packed” beef with melted provolone that adds a gooey texture and sharpness, 7-Eleven said. It’s topped with bell peppers and onions for a sweet and slightly caramelized flavor.

“Our $5 Pizza Meal Deal offers an unbeatable value that is designed to bring family and friends together over fresh pizza and celebrate the diverse flavors our customers love—because every slice tells a story,” said Deanna Hall, senior product director, fresh foods at 7-Eleven. “With the introduction of our Philly Cheesesteak pizza, customers have even more options to share great moments and enjoy their favorite flavors without compromise, one slice at a time."

Irving, Texas-based 7-Eleven Inc. operates, franchises or licenses more than 83,000 convenience stores in 19 countries and regions, including more than 13,000 7-Eleven convenience stores in the United States.

Restaurants and convenience stores alike have cooked up meal deals in recent months, trying to attract inflation-weary consumers who are cutting back on visits and tightening their spending. 

C-store retailer Circle K earlier this month introduced a slate of Meal Deals, with various food and drink bundles priced at $3, $4 and $5. 

In June, McDonald's launched its $5 Meal Deal, a McDouble burger or McChicken sandwich, 4-piece Chicken McNuggets, small Fries and choice of small soft drink. 

The burger giant said the value offer has enticed lower-income consumers, though it did not move the needle on traffic during the third quarter.
