Cava is celebrating its well-loved pita chips with a new brand ambassador, an “influencer” named “Peter Chip.”

Peter’s birthday and National Pita Day both happen to fall on Saturday, and to mark the occasion, the Washington, D.C. Mediterranean fast casual is giving away complimentary pita chips to Cava Rewards members. The freebie will be automatically dropped in members’ accounts to redeem through a digital order on March 29 only.

“We’re thrilled to invite more guests into Cava in honor of our first National Pita Day,” said Andy Rebhun, the chain’s chief experience officer, in an email to Restaurant Business. “We know how much our fans love our famous pita chips, and we couldn’t be more excited about introducing Peter Chip to the world, to help treat everyone to these fan-favorites. Peter can’t wait to celebrate his birthday and so much more with Cava Rewards members, and to share the warmth and hospitality of the Mediterranean way to our guests.”

Peter Chip will be posting on Cava's social feeds in celebration of National Pita Day.

Cava is handing over its social media passwords to Peter Chip this week so he can introduce himself and share all the details about his upcoming birthday party on Saturday. Pita chip enthusiasts can join with the character by following @CAVA on TikTok, Instagram and other channels.

The fast casual’s signature pita chips have a large following of their own. Crispy on the outside and soft and chewy inside, they are often purchased to eat on their own, dunk into a dip or use as a scooper with a Cava bowl.

The first flavored iteration of the chips, Garlic Ranch, rolled out in the third quarter of 2024, along with Cava’s first loyalty program. Both helped boost traffic 13% during that time, with the Garlic Ranch Pita Chips driving incremental attachments. More flavor extensions are planned for the future.

Peter Chip, Cava’s resident pita chip personality, also had something to say about his official partnership with the brand. “National Pita Day—aka my birthday—is coming up, and I couldn’t be more pumped! As an Aries, I love a big celebration—and what better way to mark the occasion than by treating our loyal fans to complimentary pita chips, on me,” he said in a statement.

In the fast-food Mexican sector, there is Taco Bell, and everyone else

The Bottom Line: Jack in the Box’s planned sale of Del Taco highlights the sector’s complexity. Consumers are eating more Mexican. But they’re avoiding fast-food Mexican restaurants. Unless it’s Taco Bell.

The Bottom Line: Jack in the Box is selling Del Taco just three years after buying the Mexican fast-food chain. But it’s not the first company to quickly decide to shed an acquisition. And it won’t be the last.
