Marketing Bites

Has cannabis culture finally gone mainstream?

Judging by my inbox, it has.

Sure, it’s an unscientific tally, but it appears more restaurant chains than ever before are offering up 4/20 specials.

This year, the annual unofficial day of marijuana celebration falls on Easter. But that’s not stopping chains like Velvet Taco, Buffalo Wild Wings, Magnolia Bakery and many, many, many more from jumping on the 4/20 bandwagon with pot-themed deals and special menu items.

Here’s a sampling of the 4/20 offers lighting up my inbox:

Wing chain Wing Snob is serving up a “Dime Bag” deal, running from Friday through Sunday, which includes 10 wings and an order of fries for $10.

Toasted sub chain Cheba Hut, perhaps unsurprisingly given its general vibe, is selling its 4-inch toasted “Nug” sub for $4.20 on Sunday, served on a collectible frisbee. The chain has designed a new frisbee every 4/20 for the last two decades. (Cheba Hut, though, notes that some of its stores will be closed for Easter and will observe the “holiday” the day before.)

Charleys Cheesesteaks & Wings is launching four versions of its Hot Box for the big day, including a Fried Chicken Hot Box (fries topped with cheese sauce, boneless wings and ranch), The OG Hot Box (fries topped with cheese sauce, steak, sauteed onions and Cheez Whiz), Philly Haze Hot Box (fries topped with cheese sauce, steak, grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms and melted provolone) and the Hippie Chick (fries topped with cheese sauce, chicken, grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms and melted provolone).

Twin Peaks is offering Liquid Marijuana shots and cocktails for $6 and $8, respectively. The drinks feature Captain Morgan, Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, melon liqueur and blue Curacao shaken and poured over ice, topped with pineapple juice and a dash of sweet and sour.

Jimmy John’s is selling its Toasted Hot Combo (T.H.C.) Box, with a choice of toasted sandwich, chips, dessert and a pickle spear.

Through 4/20, items on Popeyes’ Munchies Menu will sell for the discounted price of $4.20, when ordered through the chicken chain’s app or website.

Smashburger is offering up 4 Classic Smash Singles for $20 on Saturday and Sunday.

Toppers Pizza will mark the day with 50% off all Triple Topperstix at all locations, starting at 4:20 p.m. on 4/20 and running through Tuesday.

Ultra-fast delivery platform Gopuff reported a more than 20% year-over-year increase in 4/20 sales last year, with orders for baked treats up 35% that day. Gopuff partnered with Magnolia Bakery to create the exclusive Puff’rmutter Cupcake, featuring a vanilla and chocolate cupcake topped with peanut butter buttercream and filled with a marshmallow center. Those with the munchies can order a two-pack of the cupcakes on Gopuff during 4/20 weekend (and beyond) for $11.99.

Velvet Taco is bringing back its $4.20 420 Blazin’ taco through 4/20. The over-the-top taco includes mac and cheese, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos-crusted crispy chicken tenders, flamin’ red chile aioli and a sprinkle of Fruity Pebbles, wrapped in a warm flour tortilla.
