April Fools’ Day falls on Easter this year, which will likely put the pranks on simmer for some restaurants. But several brands are nevertheless showing off their mischievous sides with creative hijinks. Here are some of the most creative—and cringe-worthy—offerings.
1. Edible eyewear
Arby’s has teamed up with trendy eyewear company Warby Parker to launch #WArbys, purveyor of onion ring monocles. The eyewear is available at an Arby’s unit and a Warby Parker store in New York City from Friday through Sunday. The chains will also sell appropriately meat-and-cheesey eyeglass frames and lens-cleaning cloths online.
2. Protein powder, from an unlikely source
Last year, White Castle observed April Fools’ Day with its one-calorie Nano Slider. This year, the burger chain is upping the calorie count and nutritional profile with White Castle Whey Protein Powder. “Each individual serving includes 27 sliders scientifically granulated into 189 grams of pure Whey Protein, perfect for those who are training to be the next heavyweight champion, or simply looking to maximize their muscle mass for the summer season,” the company said in a press release.
3. Pretzel perfume
Auntie Anne’s approach to the day is a bit more on the nose. The chain says it’s found a way to bottle its soft pretzels’ signature scent, thus introducing House of A, a line of essential oils that come in three varieties: Salty, Freshly Baked and Cinnamon Twist. Benefits of the oils include “an improved palate, a catatonic state of bliss, relaxation and, in rare cases, even increased spousal attraction,” notes a news release from the chain.
4. “Secret” sauce turned dental-hygiene product
The Halal Guys, the fast-growing Middle Eastern chain, is known for its heaping platters loaded with grilled meats, orange rice, pita and salad. But fans are particularly drawn to the chain’s popular white sauce, which is drizzled on each order. For April Fools’, the chain teased its new White Sauce Toothpaste across its social media channels.
