
Starting July 10, Subway customers can make any combo or Meal of the Day a Happy Gilmore Meal for $1 extra and receive a cup featuring one of the characters from the iconic movie.
The Miami-based fast-food sandwich chain is partnering with Netflix to promote Happy Gilmore 2, the long-waited sequel that will make its debut July 25. The limited-edition cups feature Happy Gilmore, Shooter McGavin and Hal L.—all characters from the original golf movie—as well as Oscar, Happy’s new caddie.
Each Happy Gilmore Meal includes QR-coded packaging that can transport fans to Subway’s Happy Place, an immersive digital experience inspired by Happy’s dream world. Here, they can play games, check out exclusive movie clips and enter to win golf-themed prizes.
“Alongside a generation of fans, Subway can’t wait to see our old friend Happy Gilmore recapture the magic that made him such an enduring cultural icon in Happy Gilmore 2,” said Cristina Wells, Subway’s SVP of U.S. marketing, in a statement. “We’re excited to partner with Netflix and give fans more of what makes them happy—more ways to enjoy their favorite subs and more ways to engage with a world that we cherish as much as they do—with a one-of-a-kind, connected experience exclusively at Subway.”
In the original movie, released almost 30 years ago, Subway was featured in a scene in which Happy Gilmore, played by Adam Sandler, plugs the sandwich chain’s cold cut combo. Subway shows up again in Happy Gilmore 2 on Happy’s branded golf bag. Sandler reprises his role, as does Chris McDonald, who plays Shooter McGavin and is the official spokesperson for Subway’s Happy Gilmore meal. Ben Stiller is back as Hal L. and Bad Bunny plays Oscar the Caddie.
Subway is leaning more into golf merch than food with the promotion. There is not a specific sandwich created as a movie tie-in, but MVP Rewards members can score prizes when they enter the immersive world of Subway’s Happy Place. Here they have the opportunity to earn bonus entries into a weekly sweepstakes with the chance to win a custom golf cart, a golf locker kit and branded golf gear, exclusive golf apparel, weekly $3,000 cash prizes delivered as “Big Ass Checks” and a grand prize of a golf resort trip for two.
