Take a bite out of these National Cookie Day celebrations

Cookies get a well-deserved special day on Wednesday and a number of operators have sweet surprises in store.

National Cookie Day falls on Dec. 4, timed to encourage home bakers to start their ovens for the holiday cookie rush.

But as with other national food holidays, operators are jumping in to celebrate on Wednesday with their own cookie promotions.

Milk Bar, the boutique bakery chain founded by famed pastry chef Christina Tosi, has teamed up with the McCormick spice company on a holiday cookie collaboration. The first 100 customers at Milk Bar’s New York City flagship, Williamsburg, Brooklyn location, Los Angeles flagship and Washington, D.C. store will receive a free limited-edition Milk Bar x McCormick Candy Cane Pretzel Bark Cookie

In the spirit of holiday cookie exchanges, McCormick and Milk Bar have also shared the recipe for the sweet, salty and minty cookie so home bakers can recreate it in their own kitchens. But for those who prefer cookie buying to cookie baking, the Candy Cane Pretzel Bark Cookies will be on sale for $3.25 each at the same Milk Bar locations through Dec. 31 once the freebies are gone.

National Cookie Day is a big deal for Subway—the Miami-based sandwich giant claims it sells more fresh-baked cookies than any other U.S. restaurant company due to its sheer number of locations. Starting Tuesday and through Dec. 4, MVP Rewards members can visit SubwayCookieClub.com and be randomly selected to earn a free cookie coupon dropped into their loyalty account. The coupons will continue to be dropped from Dec. 9-31.

Subway’s classic cookie assortment includes Chocolate Chip, Double Chocolate, White Chip Macadamia Nut, Oatmeal Raisin and Raspberry Cheesecake; the footlong cookies are not included in the Subway Cookie Club promo. But footlong cookie fans can celebrate National Cookie Day when ordering through DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub for a limited time.

With every order of $20 or more, DoorDash customers get a free footlong cookie on Dec. 4 and Dec. 6-8; Uber Eats users are entitled to a free Double Chocolate Peppermint Footlong Cookie from Dec. 2-8; and GrubHub purchasers earn a free footlong cookie from Dec. 4-10. Premium members of each delivery service need only spend $15 for a freebie.

Great American Cookies is celebrating with a Buy One, Get One free deal on a slice of its Original Cookie Cake. The recipe for this signature dates back to 1977; it’s typically baked in a round or square pizza-type pan and decorated for birthdays and other occasions.

“At Great American Cookies, we don’t just do cookies—we also do Cookie Cakes, and we want to celebrate National Cookie Day with a unique offering on something we do best,” said Katie Thoms, senior director of marketing for Great American Cookies, in a statement.

Chip City Cookies aims to snag more regulars with its promotion. Those customers who download the app and place an order on Dec. 4, get a free cookie when they come to any of the 45 locations for pickup. Choices are many, ranging from traditional Chocolate Chip to Horchata, S’mores and Blueberry Cheesecake.

The beneficiaries of Insomnia Cookies’ National Cookie Day celebration are the chain’s Insomnia Rewards Members. On Wednesday, locations are gifting all rewards members a complimentary Classic cookie, no purchase necessary. Varieties include Chocolate Chunk, Snickerdoodle, Oatmeal Raisin and Red Velvet Cookies ‘n Cream. Rewards members who prefer Deluxe Insomnia Cookies can buy one for just $1 on Dec. 4, choosing from Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, Salted Caramel, Confetti and several other options. These usually sell for $4.95 each.
