Luis Ruvalcaba, a 25-year veteran of the chain restaurant business, has joined the On the Border casual Mexican chain as COO.

He joins the brand after serving as VP of retail operations for Peet’s Coffee, with responsibility for 250 cafes. Earlier, he spent three years with Patxi’s Pizza as CEO, president and COO, and 11 years with BJ’s Restaurants, rising to senior regional VP of operations, with responsibility for 41 full-service restaurants. Ruvalcaba started his career in the 1990s with Chili’s, whose parent company, Brinker International, owned On the Border at one point.

Ruvalcaba “shares our companywide goal of pushing performance forward in strategic ways to deliver sustainable results,” On the Border CEO Matt Hood said in a statement. “Luis will be a tremendous asset in helping us reclaim our position as the leader in Mexican casual dining.”
