Panera Bread expands rewards program to grocery CPG

Shoppers who spend $20 on Panera-branded grocery items, including salad dressings and mac & cheese, can get a $5 electronic gift card to use at the fast-casual brand's restaurants.

Hamra Enterprises acquires 24 Panera Bread units across the South

The Missouri-based group is also a franchisee of Wendy's, Noodles & Company and, soon, Caribou Coffee. The acquisition brings the group's restaurant count to a total of 195.

The timing of the potential public offering remains unclear, but the group that includes Panera Bread, Einstein Bros. and Caribou Coffee remains on track to go public again.

Deepening the partnership with Amazon, the move is designed to make ordering at home even easier, and hands-free.

The bakery-cafe chain will be the first restaurant concept to test use of Amazon One contactless palm readers, designed to speed the in-store experience for MyPanera members.

The ads highlight how "generosity is in the details," like comfy seats. The campaign also features refreshed packaging and a big focus on new toasted baguettes.

Members now make up 1 in 4 of the bakery-cafe chain's transactions and the program continues to drive in new guests.

A classic in Europe, the fast-casual chain says it hopes to fill a perceived market void in the U.S.

A new smaller urban prototype opens in New York City, and will soon be joined by a no-dine-in Panera To Go.
