Most restaurant operators consider technology a necessity for running their restaurants today. They rely on technology to help with day-to-day tasks like managing revenue and inventory, and to fill in labor shortage gaps. While the promise of restaurant technology is enormous, sometimes it doesn't live up to the hype, leading to frustration and trepidation about trying new technology.
What restaurant tech brings to restaurants…and doesn't
Nearly 70% of restaurant operators who have embraced technology over the past few years say it's made their restaurants more efficient and productive, the National Restaurant Association's state of the industry report found. About 40% found that technology has improved customer satisfaction. But the report also highlighted a weakness in restaurant technology. Less than 30% of restaurants said investing in technology has improved their profits. That number was nearly as low for operators who said technology led to cost savings.
Operators are also worried about raising labor costs, and this is a key area where the right technology could benefit restaurants. The state of the industry report found that 94% of operators said labor costs were a significant concern for them. About half of the restaurants surveyed said automation to help with labor shortages will become more common in their industry. But 74% said technology integration will augment rather than replace human labor.
Kiosks bring a key ingredient to restaurants
Kiosks can solve a lot of restaurants' headaches, and operators are catching on to this. The state of the industry report found that 30% of restaurants planned to devote resources to kiosks, which can assist with inventory, employee trainings, menu control, and so much more.
Kiosks can also ease labor burdens if utilized as the primary tool for customer orders. But kiosk ordering goes beyond labor saving. A Technomic Ignite Consumer report found a significant increase in average checks at both quick service and fast casual establishments. There was a nearly 8% increase in average check at quick service and a whopping 15% increase at fast casual establishments when kiosks were used for orders rather than employees. Kiosk ordering was especially useful to customers ordering for big groups, the report found.
