CSPI: Hold the salt

After suing the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to compel the regulation of salt content in foods, the Center for Science in the Public Interest is also urging the agency to mandate that restaurants disclose on their menus the sodium content of every item. The public-health watchdog group noted that efforts by Britain's government to cut salt intake resulted in a 20% drop in the sodium content of McDonald's Happy Meals in that country.

It also cited findings that Denny's Lumberjack Breakfast Slam has 4,460 mg of sodium, or nearly twice the recommended daily intake for young adults.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest has proven itself a restaurant-industry nemesis over the years, and has been a major force pushing for compulsory menu nutritional labeling.
