Shake Shack same-store sales rise 1.7%

Shake Shack revealed positive earnings for the first quarter of 2018 in an earnings call Thursday.

Revenues increased 29.1%, while same-store sales rose 1.7% over the year-ago quarter. CEO Randy Garutti attributed the boost to the chain’s expanded digital offerings.

Since last year, Shake Shack has been testing in-store kiosks and delivery and plans to continue focusing on its digital initiatives throughout 2018.

Though looking to modern technology to boost sales, the chain is keeping the old with the new when it comes to payment tech. Four or five new stores slated to open during Q2 will contain both kiosks and cashiers. Based on feedback the chain has received around its one kiosk-only unit, which opened last year, "One of the things we've clearly seen is that our guests do often want to pay with cash,” Garutti said in an earnings call, adding that the chain “wants to put the power in [consumers’] hands.”

Additionally, the chain says it’s still planning to open 32 to 35 domestic locations this year.

Shake Shack stocks were up 20% Friday morning on the chain’s earnings.
