A Houston bakery run by a former “Top Chef: Just Desserts” contestant enacted some just desserts on cranky Yelp reviewers Saturday.
Pastry chef Rebecca Masson’s Fluff Bake Bar hosted a “Baked with Hate” sale, with a special menu inspired by the nastiest online reviews.
For example, Yelper Nick M. had this to say in his one-star review of Fluff Bake Bar on February 17:
“I went into YELP & Put ‘The Best Cannoli In Houston’ This Place Came Up as # 8 out of 176, So I drove 25 Miles To Visit It, When I Ordered The Kind Lady Behind The Counter Told Me They Stopped Making Them Just A Few Months Ago.”
So, Masson’s special menu featured “Nick’s #8 Cannoli” at the very top.
Also featured on Saturday’s Baked With Hate menu: The #Buttergate Croissant (stuffed with Louie Mueller BBQ beef rib), The Four Star Hot Veal Sandwich, Steven T’S Cosmic Brownie, Primavera Quiche and (our personal favorite) Rebecca Is An Angry Hot Tamale (spicy pork tamales).
The pastry shop, which has a four-star overall rating on Yelp with 160 reviews, also sold $20 “Baked with Hate” T-shirts.
Maybe it’s time to ignore the trusted online-interaction advice of “don’t feed the trolls.” Apparently snark sells.
Says Masson in a weekend Facebook post:
“Wow!!! That's all I can say. Yesterday was a whirlwind of a day. I am overwhelmed at the support and love that was shown to Fluff Bake Bar! You guys are all simply amazing. I am so happy that everyone saw our bake sale as a positive spin on something negative.
We sold out of shirts yesterday!!! But never fear, I am having more made as we speak …”
