After being gone from Montana for six years, convenience-store retailer Maverik Inc. has returned to Big Sky Country—and is offering opening deals until April 4.
The 5,900-square-foot location in Helena opened March 21 at 3196 Colonial Drive. Maverik stores typically range from 3,300 to 5,900 square feet, CSP previously reported.
Maverik opened a convenience store in Bridger, Montana, in the 1970s but closed it in 2018 rather than do a remodel, the Independent Record reported. The Kum & Go chain Maverik acquired in April has one store in the northeast corner of the state in Plentywood, Montana, CSP reported.
The Helena store and gas station cost $4.9 million and sit on 4.6 acres near the South Helena interchange at Interstate 15.
The store, open 24 hours, features Maverik’s “Adventure’s First Stop” branding with panoramic landscape photos of the outdoors in Montana and topographic maps on the store’s walls, adventure imagery and video content on the store’s TVs and gas pumps, and televisions in the fountain dispensers. Other amenities include an RV dump, RV and truck lanes and picnic tables by the building.

The location also sells Maverik’s premium BonFire food, which is made fresh daily. Offerings include burritos, pizzas, sandwiches, salads and other hot and cold food items. This location also showcases Maverik’s newest bean-to-cup coffee program featuring coffee blends from around the world, accompanied by a collection of fresh-made pastries.
Adventure Club or Nitro members can take advantage of opening day deals that include a free BonFire Burrito, a free fountain refill and more, Maverik said on its website.
“Maverik features a broad distribution of stores across the Intermountain West, the part of the country that enjoys significant exposure to outdoor recreation and adventure activities including hiking, mountain climbing, biking, camping, off-roading, canoeing and playing in the abundant State and National Parks," Maverik CEO Chuck Maggelet said in announcing the grand opening.
Maggelet recently announced his retirement.
Salt Lake City-based Maverik operates in 13 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Montana, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. With its acquisition of Kum & Go, based in Des Moines, Iowa, the combined company operates more than 800 c-stores.
