Subway on Thursday said it is coming out with a line of four wrap sandwiches, its first new bread option in three years, as the brand continues to work on upgrades to its menu.

The Miami-based chain said the wraps are “inspired by Middle Eastern cuisine,” with flatbread that has “a soft and bubbly tortilla.” The company said that the flatbreads hold more ingredients, enabling them to hold “a footlong protein portion in a six-inch size.” The wraps will be available April 11.

The wraps include:

  • Homestyle Chicken Salad: Rotisserie-style chicken and mayo topped with lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, cucumber and red onion;
  • Honey Mustard Chicken: Rotisserie-style chicken with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions and cheddar cheese and a Honey Mustard sauce;
  • Turkey, Bacon and Avocado: Turkey, bacon and smashed avocado topped with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, cheddar cheese and Peppercorn Ranch sauce;
  • Cali Caprese: Mozzarella and avocado topped with lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, red onions, cucumbers, roasted garlic aioli and Parmesan vinaigrette.

The wraps are the latest in a line of menu upgrades at the chain, which has pushed the improvements as part of a massive turnaround effort. That effort began three years ago with a refreshed menu, including upgrades to its traditional bread.

The company has since added a line of core menu items called the Subway Series designed to shift the chain away from customizable sandwiches. And then it added slicers designed to give the chain a bigger quality halo.

Wraps appear to be having a moment in the restaurant business, with chains like Burger King and Wendy’s doing battle for snacking customers looking for lower-priced menu items.

Subway, however, argues that its line is aimed at giving customers more. “Wraps have become an afterthought on restaurant menus with uninspiring choices and snack-size portions that leave you wanting more,” Paul Fabre, SVP of culinary and innovation, said in a statement.

The company said customers can order any sandwich on the new flatbread.
