GFS considers building center in reach of Chicago area, 4-5 years down the road

Gordon Food Service (GFS), Grand Rapids, MI, has signed a letter of intent to acquire property in northwestern Indiana, across the border from Illinois and the Chicago area. The potential $80-million purchase could be used for a new facility four to five years down the road, according to a spokesman. "However, we are not committed to anything yet."
An article in an Indiana newspaper indicates that GFS wants to build a 320,000-square-foot facility here, but GFS says it has no specific plan in mind. Furthermore, GFS can back out of the deal, if it determines that the property is unsuitable.
