ID NEWS: Canada pushes for rollback of U.S. beef ban

Canadian scientists have begun a dialogue with U.S. officials to assure them that Canadian beef is now safe, according to Reuters.

The North American trading partner wants the U.S. to lift its ban of Canadian beef imposed after an isolated case of BSE, or "mad cow disease," was discovered last month, in a herd in northern Alberta.

An interim report on Canada's handling of the case should be out by Friday. If the U.S. is satisfied, expectations are that the ban will be lifted in stages. Muscle cuts and live cattle younger than 30 months of age would be the first imports the U.S. would be likely to be allow.
