ANAHEIM, CA (Oct. 7)—Tim York, president of Markon Cooperative, the leading broadline distributor produce marketing group, has received the Golden Checkmark Award for support of food safety initiatives by the Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement (LGMA). York accepted the award during the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit convention in Anaheim, California, last week.

Joe Pezzini, chair of Sacramento-based LGMA, noted that Markon requires a Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement government inspection for its suppliers. The program, developed in response to foodborne illness outbreaks related to spinach and other leafy greens, is being considered as a guide for national commodity-specific food safety regulations from the Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an initiative of President Barack Obama's Food Safety Working Group.

"I really want to express to you that LGMA is doing what we asked for as buyers in 2007," York said, in accepting the award. "I want to encourage others to look at it."
