Wayback and BurgerFi have a Twittersphere beatdown

Small restaurant chains routinely take advantage of Twitter’s free exposure to create buzz. Last week, the attention grab turned into a melee.

Wayback Burgers took a stab at Red Robin, Five Guys and BurgerFi after cosigning a customer’s preference for its Wayback Classic. BurgerFi wasted no time in seizing the opportunity and underscoring its all-natural beef. Soon, it was a full-force Twitter war.

That’s when we were dragged into it.

After more exchanges, BurgerFi cited its recent appearance on Restaurant Business’s list of the Top 25 fastest-growing fast-casuals.

Similarly, Wayback Burgers unleashed its own barrage with a calculated mention of its No. 4 spot on our Future 50 list of the fastest-growing small chains.

Though brief, BurgerFi and Wayback’s burger brawl demonstrates how growing chains and independents can milk the benefits of the internet to establish their brand and take an innovative approach to publicity.

And while we love a Twitter duel as much as the next guy, Wayback and BurgerFi will have to wait until the results are in on our upcoming 50 Burger Chains report to officially close the bun on the #burgerwars.
