Bloomin' Brands reshuffles board after Starboard takes big stake

Chairman Jim Craigie will be replaced by fellow member R. Michael Mohan, and Rohit Lal, CIO of trucking company Saia, is joining the board.

The brand had been in decline for years after peaking at nearly 50 units in 2011. It’s part of a rash of restaurant closures recently.

The sports-bar staple will come in three flavors and servings of eight or twelve, just in time for football season.

The chain has been hit hard by changing trade areas and, more recently, soaring inflation. It believes the "pruning" will help its 91 remaining stores.

The activist investor, which once won every seat on the Darden Restaurants' board, now owns nearly 10% of the Outback Steakhouse parent.

Price-conscious guests and the loss of MrBeast Burger took a bite out of delivery sales. But the chain is more focused on the dining room, anyway.

The virtual wing brand will get a physical presence at the bar and in the dining room as the chain looks to boost traffic.

After a successful return to the airwaves earlier this year, the chain plans to invest up to $60 million in more commercials.

The deal is a change of course for the 76-unit steakhouse brand, which had been preparing for an IPO.
