Bartenders in California could soon be forced to undergo training to help them detect the signs of drunk patrons, under a new bill introduced in the state legislature, the Sacramento Business Journal reports.
The proposal would require staff members who serve alcohol to take a state-approved alcohol-training course. Though such courses are common throughout California, they are currently voluntary, the Business Journal says.
Matt Sutton, vice president of government affairs and public policy for the California Restaurant Association, told the Business Journal that the group has not yet developed a position on the proposal, as it was just introduced.
While the association supports more responsibility around serving alcohol, “[w]hen you get into a mandate situation, the devil is in the details,” he said.
