Eleven Madison Park, which was named the top restaurant in the world last year by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants organization, fell to No. 4 on the latest annual ranking, which was announced this week at a ceremony in Spain.

The much-lauded New York City tasting-menu restaurant had been closed for a third of last year for a major renovation, giving judges fewer chances to dine there.

Regardless, Eleven Madison Park remained the highest-rated U.S. operation on this year’s list, which includes just six U.S. restaurants. The top honor for 2018 went to Italy’s Osteria Francescana, known for its whimsical riffs on classic Italian cuisine. The restaurant has made the top 10 for the past several years.

Other U.S. restaurants making the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list for 2018 are: Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, N.Y., (No. 12), Cosme in New York City (No. 25, up from No. 40 last year), Le Bernardin in New York City (No. 26, down from No. 17 last year), Chicago’s Alinea (No. 34, down from No. 21 last year) and Saison in San Francisco (No. 46).

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list is assembled by William Reed Business Media, a British firm that employs more than 1,000 judges around the world. Find the complete 2018 list here.
