I’m standing up for the industry. Are you?

As restaurateurs are we our own worst enemy? The question is not meant to be rhetorical. In fact, I hope it spurs conversation and generates answers from many different viewpoints. From my perspective, the answer is an overwhelming yes. And if we don’t change, our industry is at risk of losing its place as a cornerstone of our economy.

Consumers expect same prices for healthier alternatives

Though many Americans understand the importance of eating healthfully, the majority of consumers expect to pay no more for healthier items than they would for other menu options. Fully 70% of adults over 50 (a group that typically expresses more interest in healthy eating than their younger counterparts) said they would not pay an additional fee for healthier items.

Think labor unions are someone else’s problem? Think again. While unions and other workers’ rights groups haven’t fed well at the restaurant trough to date, that scenario is poised to change.
