Confirmed: Bird Flu Found in Pigs;With Globalization of Food, U.S. Industry Needs Vigilance and Str

Agence France Presse reported this week that the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture had discovered a year ago a deadly strain of bird flu or avian influenza in pigs. At the same time the World Health Organization said more money and global attention should be focused on the continuing avian influenza epidemic sweeping the Asian poultry industry. WHO wants to study the virus, which experts fear could mutate and trigger a human epidemic. We asked Grover Niemeier, foodservice management professional and a member of the ID Access Editorial Advisory Board, Chicago, for his views on the implications of this for the U.S. foodservice industry.
