Subway is saying goodbye to Milford, Conn.

The sandwich giant, which earlier this year opened a new headquarters in Miami that houses many of its executives and its menu development team, on Monday officially opened its new second headquarters in Shelton, Conn.

The location is about 10 miles away from the chain’s longtime headquarters in Milford, Conn. Subway recently opened a second headquarters in Miami, near the home of CEO John Chidsey, saying it was important to have a headquarters in a world-class city.

Subway’s new second headquarters in Shelton is 90,000 square feet with an open floor plan, multipurpose rooms and “The Lounge,” a place for employees to “meet, dine and socialize.” It also features a modernized workplace in a corporate park featuring fitness centers, recreational activities, healthcare providers, a beauty salon and childcare centers.

The building will house essential business functions including human resources, financing and legal.

“Connecticut has been at the heart of Subway’s story for nearly 60 years,” Chidsey said in a statement. He said the office will provide workers a “world-class workspace” that will “serve as a showcase of our brand.”

Subway is the country’s largest restaurant chain based on unit count, and No. 2 worldwide behind McDonald’s, with some 37,000 global locations. The company is in the process of a sale to the private equity firm Roark Capital.
