The U.S. Department of Agriculture is examining tissue samples from a cow to determine whether it suffered from bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE. If the test comes back positive, it would represent the second case of BSE in the U.S.
USDA associate deputy administrator Andrea Morgan said the animal in question never entered the food chain.
Initial testing of the animal came up with an inconclusive result, which Morgan said was perfectly normal.
Conclusive results from USDA are expected within the next four to seven days, it said.
