Burger King’s 70th birthday officially falls on June 1, but the fast-food chain is getting a jumpstart on celebrating with the launch Monday of a new limited-time dessert.

The Birthday Pie Slice features a creamy birthday cake-flavored pie filling in a cookie crumb crust topped with rainbow sprinkles, cake bits and whipped topping. It's selling for $2.49.

A couple of weeks after the dessert’s debut, BK’s celebration continues for Royal Perks members. On National Hamburger Day, May 28, participants in the chain’s loyalty program can get a free burger with a purchase of $0.70 or more.

The milestone birthday tie-in is also good on May 29, when customers can score a free Croissan’wich with a purchase of $0.70. The specials continue from May 30 through June 3, with freebies of a medium soft drink, cheeseburger, birthday pie slice, crispy chicken sandwich and Whopper Jr. respectively for Royal Perks members who spend $0.70.

All the deals are available through the BK app and online only.

“Since 1954, Burger King has prided itself on two things – flame-grilling and letting guests ‘Have It Your Way’. And, while a lot has changed over the last 70 years, we’ve always remained committed to our guests, including the past few years as we have been reclaiming our flame with initiatives such as remodeling and modernizing our restaurants, investing in state-of-the-art technology, menu innovations and more,” Pat O’Toole, CMO of Burger King North America, said in a statement. “As we look to celebrate our milestone birthday this June, we are proud of the legacy this brand has built and on which we stand, and are beyond grateful for our royal guests who have made it all possible.”

At the end of April, Miami-based Burger King announced it is investing another $300 million in its “Royal Reset” remodeling program through 2028. That’s in addition to the chain’s ongoing $400 million “Reclaim the Flame” revitalization program.

BK also seems to be ramping up menu R&D outside of the burger category. Recently, the chain tapped into the beverage innovation trend with the launch of a colorful Frozen Cotton Candy drink in shades of baby blue.
