Jimmy John’s is adding a new bread to its menu for the first time in more than two decades, the sandwich chain announced Wednesday.

The 9-Grain Wheat Sub is made with a blend of wheat, rye, flaxseed, quinoa, millet, oats, barley, amaranth and spelt, along with honey, coconut and molasses.

It joins the chain’s traditional French bread, as well as a 9-grain sliced wheat offering.

“Over the last year, we have been listening to our customers to better understand exactly what they want and how we can offer additional high-quality products,” John Shea, Jimmy John’s chief marketing officer, said in a statement. “The new 9-Grain Wheat Sub is a direct result of those conversations.”

To promote the new bread, the chain launched a pop-up unit constructed out of a grain bin in a wheat field in Binford, N.D.

The popularity of ancient grains, such as those in Jimmy John’s new sub, continues to grow as consumers seek out ingredients with a health halo. Menu items with ancient grains have grown 28.1% over the past five years, according to data from Restaurant Businesssister company Technomic.
