In-car ordering revs up

The likelihood of a connected car that would let drivers order and pay for a pizza without taking their hands off the wheel got a boost last month, thanks to news by a couple of brand giants. This spring, Pizza Hut will test such a service for three months in northern California. Drivers will be able to access menus, order and pay for a pie, and beacon technology will alert employees when the guest pulls up to pick up the order.

And during its Apple Watch live event, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook noted that CarPlay, its in-car operating system, will be offered in more than 40 new car models by year’s end. Drivers will be able to access restaurant apps to order food and pay via Apple Pay.

The moves come a year after Domino’s announced its partnership with Ford to offer similar in-car ordering. Domino’s service will be available this spring in all cars equipped with Ford Sync technology.
